EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Equity Analyst, Coal & Specialty Metals – Patersons Securities

October 2007 to September 2013, Sydney

Patersons is a privately held stockbroker. It has the second largest retail network in Australia and is the largest Equity Raiser by number of issues on the ASX. I was the lead analyst covering the coal sector and special metals stocks on the ASX as part of a team that has a strong focus on mining, energy, and mining services companies. I conducted detailed financial modelling, reporting, and commentary for stocks under coverage with formal Buy, Hold, Sell recommendations. These stocks included: WHC, NHC, YAL, CPL, COK, BND, CKA, ZYL, NAE, NHO, LYC, ORE, PEK, NTU and formerly FLX, CEY, GCL, MCC, RIV, AQA, NEC, MTE, and CXY. I have deep knowledge of all energy related matters including CO2, and alternative energy and am quoted frequently in the print media (AFR, SMH, Reuters, Bloomberg) and occasionally in the TV media (ABC, SKY, CNBC, SBS). Some of my proudest achievements are:

  • As calculated by Bloomberg, I was consistently ranked in the top 3 analysts for my sector over the last four years.
  • In 2011, I was awarded the #1 Stockpicker in the Energy Sector by Reuters Starmine (I was the #2 Stockpicker in 2010).
  • I trained and educated two of my associate analysts in modelling and financial evaluation.

Industry Analyst/Relationship Manager – ANZ Institutional Bank

August 2005 to September 2007, Sydney

My main responsibilities were market intelligence across the metals and energy industries and absorbing, synthesising, and applying this information. I produced and published the ANZ Daily Resources Summary and grew the readership by over 20% in 18 months. I also produced ANZ’s quarterly Commodity Outlook with commodity price forecasts. I regularly supplied the commodity market view for our credit submissions. Some of the highlights from my time in this role include:

  • Participation in the first US Private Placement for Centennial Coal.
  • Competed in the Leveraged deal for a Salt producer in Western Australia.
  • Contributed to an M&A pitch for LNG to a Chinese oil and gas major.
  • Live Television and Radio Interviews covering my view of commodities on Bloomberg, ABC, BBC Asia, and CNBC India. I also gave regular print interviews with Reuters, Dow Jones, and AP.
  • I developed a proposal for establishing a private Carbon Trading Market.

Alongside my role as the Industry Analyst I also became the primary Relationship Manager for 6 resources clients – all with revenues over A$200 million. My portfolio included several Australian subsidiaries of large multi-nationals and required close understanding of their business needs and the bank’s ability to profit from those needs. One of the highlights included the establishment of a trade financing facility for a large Chinese copper producer.

Editor/Analyst – Wood Mackenzie (Barlow Jonker)

August 1998 to August 2003, Sydney

Wood Mackenzie (which purchased Barlow Jonker) is a well-known energy and minerals consulting company. Our clients included large resource companies, power and steel producers mainly in north and south Asia, investment banks and research houses. Some of my achievements included:

  • Contributed to the preparation of Information Memoranda or Due Diligence for coal mines, railway, port, power station, and steel mill developments and transactions.
  • Provided solutions for specific consulting client requests, in particular with regards to market or pricing analysis of the electricity, steel and coal industries.
  • Managed a suite of daily, weekly, and monthly publications. These included the Coalportal.com Daily News, Coalfax, Australian Coal Report, and the Indonesian Coal & Power amongst others.
  • Maintained an extended network of contacts to maintain information flow and to verify data.
  • Edited and produced the COAL annual reference book and increased the advertising revenue for four years running. In charge of budgets, costs, contributors, content, printing, and publishing.
  • Managed and maintained a series of internationally recognised coal price indices. Also initiated development of new indices including the Latin American Coal Index and the improvement of the Queensland Hard Coking Coal Index.

Analyst/DBA Project Finance – ABN Amro Bank

October 1997 to March 1998, Sydney

I was contracted by the Project Finance Division. I designed, built, and populated a large relational database using MS Access. The model is used to analyse the NSW domestic thermal coal supply market and to compare the relative price competitiveness of coal mines and power stations in anticipation of a power industry privatization within the state. The model consisted of geological, geographical and equipment information as well as royalty, extraction, preparation, transportation and combustion costs. Later I undertook additional work for the Corporate Finance division in relation to railway privatisations in Victoria.

Analyst – C. Randall & Associates

April 1997 to October 1997, Newcastle

C. Randall & Associates is a small coal consulting company focusing on the Hunter Valley coal industry and serving clients in Australia and north Asia. My achievements included:

  • Analysis and interpretation of the legal, technical, and environmental documentation for a new power project. This included the creation of a documentation-reference timeline database on Claris. The major aim of the database was to compare the technical plans of the power project sponsor with the approved technology and commercial contracts. Of particular focus was the efficiency of coal-waste combustion and predicted greenhouse gas reductions.
  • Researched and assisted with client reports on mine efficiency and equipment costs.
  • Designed, built, and populated a customer and subscription database.
